Hello, this is Nexus Plumbing.
In our last post, we introduced you to Subsoil Drainage and how it helps minimize rainwater damage. Continuing from that, we’d like to share some important tips on how to prevent water leaks caused by high water pressure.
Nexus Plumbing has been providing plumbing services across Auckland for over 5 years. Recently, we’ve seen a sharp rise in requests for pipe repairs—particularly water meter pipe bursts.
When we performed on-site inspections across North Shore, Central City, and Manukau, we found pressure readings consistently over 900 kPa—far exceeding the average household level of 500–600 kPa.
This elevated water pressure is a major contributor to pipe leaks and bursts.
kPa (kilopascals) is a unit used to measure pressure—like water pressure or tire pressure. 500 kPa means 500 kilograms of force per square meter. No wonder older pipes struggle!
Limiting valves help regulate the pressure coming into your home, keeping it at safe, steady levels. Most homes have them near the hot water cylinder or garage, but the most vulnerable spot is right after the water meter.
Due to increased pressure across Auckland, it is now essential to install a limiting valve immediately after the water meter to protect underground piping. Pipes buried under driveways and lawns are costly to repair once damaged.
Tip: If your water meter spins even when no taps are on, it’s a clear sign of a leak.
