Subsoil Drainage Solution in Auckland: Real Case Study & Tips

Lately, we’ve been getting a lot of messages from homeowners struggling with water accumulation and poor drainage due to intense rainfalls over short periods in Auckland.

In early March, my team was called to a home in South Auckland to carry out subsoil drainage work. The homeowners had been dealing with drainage issues for some time. We worked with them to design a solution that involved laying subsoil drainage to redirect water flow and ensure proper drainage.

When they first contacted us, they described how water was leaking into their home and how the driveway was constantly flooded.

This particular home was built on a slightly elevated plot of land, and on rainy days, water would accumulate in the garage and rise to ankle height. Upon inspection, we found no leaking pipes or sewage issues — the problem came from surface water.

Water from the back lawn was pooling and seeping into the home instead of draining properly. The soil was not absorbing the water fast enough, and the water began to damage the foundation.

Our Solution: Subsoil Drainage

To fix the issue, we installed Novacoil subsoil drainage that redirects water away from the house and into a cesspit. This type of drainage is ideal to protect property foundations from water damage.

What is subsoil drainage? It involves placing perforated pipes (like Novacoil) under the ground. These collect water and guide it away from critical areas like the foundation, driveway or lawn.

  • Perforated pipes collect groundwater
  • Water flows into cesspit or drainage outlet
  • Protects house foundations from flooding

Who should consider subsoil drainage?

  1. Homes with basements: Prevent water from entering by redirecting it away from foundations.
  2. Homes on steep slopes: Stops water from flowing into and damaging downhill structures.
  3. Uneven terrain: Avoids puddles and saturated soil by evening out water distribution underground.
  4. Properties with heavy concrete coverage: Helps manage surface runoff that has nowhere to go.
