Water Damage & Your Insurance: A Plumber’s Guide on Who to Call First

As plumbers, we’re experts in pipes, but we often get questions about something else: home insurance claims. If you have a mortgage, you have home insurance. But when a water-related disaster strikes, the details of your policy can be confusing.

When you discover a sudden leak or water damage, should you call your insurer or a plumber first? The answer is clear: you should always call a plumber first.

In the stressful moment of a burst pipe or a flooded floor, it’s hard to know what to do. To help you navigate this, we want to explain how insurance claims for water damage typically work in New Zealand and what our role is in the process.

New Zealand insurance companies (like AMI, AA, Tower, etc.) generally categorise water damage in three ways. Understanding these categories will help you know what you can likely claim.


Leaking Laundry Tub

1. Accidental Damage

This is exactly what it sounds like: damage that happens suddenly and unexpectedly.


  • Pipe bursting inside a wall and flooding the floor
  • Kitchen sink or toilet overflowing
  • Washing machine or dishwasher hose failing
  • Water pouring from the bottom of your HWC
  • Water suddenly dripping from your ceiling

If you discover a sudden leak like this, your first call should be to a plumber. If the leak is severe, turn off the water at your water meter on the street. For smaller drips, placing a bucket and towels underneath can help manage the immediate damage.

When we arrive, we will find and repair the leak and then provide you with a detailed report that you can use for your insurance claim. While your insurance policy typically does not cover our call-out fee or the cost of the pipe repair itself, it usually covers the resulting damage—like replacing flooring, gib, or repainting walls. For simple cases, our report is often enough. For more complex situations, your insurer may send an assessor to inspect the damage. If the repairs are extensive, a builder will also be needed, and we will work with them to provide a comprehensive quote.


Dux Quest Pipe

Important Exception: Dux Quest Piping

Dux Quest is a brand of black plastic piping that was common in NZ homes. It is notoriously prone to splitting and bursting. If your leak is from a Dux Quest pipe, there is a high chance your insurer will decline your claim. It’s a good idea to check if you have this piping in your home.

2. Gradual Damage

This is damage that occurs slowly over a long period from a persistent, slow leak.


  • Small crack in a shower tray slowly rotting the floor
  • Broken bathroom liner allowing water seepage
  • Ceiling drip causing mould and stains over time

Most policies do not cover gradual damage. If an insurer sees signs of mould or rot, they are very likely to decline the claim. That’s why it’s crucial to act fast if you see any signs of a potential leak—investigate it immediately and notify your insurer.

3. Hidden Gradual Damage

Leaks inside walls or under floors can be almost impossible to detect. Fortunately, many NZ insurance policies offer limited cover for this—but it varies by provider.

Cover is usually capped between $2,000–$5,000 and only applies to resulting damage, not the cost of the plumber’s visit or repair. Often this can only be claimed once per policy lifetime—so read your policy carefully.

What You Should Do If You Suspect a Leak


  • Be Alert: Musty smells, high water bills, or damp patches could be signs of a leak.
  • Do the Meter Test: Turn off all taps and check the water meter. If it moves, you have a leak.
  • Call a Plumber: Act quickly so the damage can be classed as ‘accidental’.
  • Document Everything: Take photos and keep your plumber’s report.
  • Know Your Policy: Be aware of your excess and what your policy excludes.
